Twitter for Business, Taking the First Step to Social Marketing Domination
Is Twitter the ONLY place to get started with your social marketing efforts?
Not hardly.
Facebook is definitely another place to get started. I have had the most success with Twitter but I have also put more time into using Twitter. I have only recently ramped up my Facebook efforts because I was already seeing success in the small amount of effort I was putting into Facebook.
So it’s time to get started on Twitter. If you already have an account, just hang with me. If you are a super user, I may lose you for the rest of this post but hang tight! Social marketing can be intimidating to some but it is the greatest “marketing on autopilot” medium I have come across since the launch of eBay.
The competition can be fierce but you have to jump in and get started or you will be left behind. With as little as five thousand followers and some neat linking of sites, Twitter has grown my reach ten fold in a few short months.
I am not going to get into teaching you how to setup a Twitter account but I will tell you that you need to have the essentials and you should be using Twitter for business.
First, you need a name that people will remember, one tied to your niche or representative of your brand. You should have an image of yourself or your brand’s logo.
Using an image of yourself definitely makes you a bit more personable but I have been using my brand logo and have had success. You should link to your blog or your main site that let’s people know a bit more about you so that you can begin building a little bit of trust with your followers. And, you should fill in a description about you or your business in the Bio section provided.
Now this next step applies to everyone on Twitter. Go make some friends! I don’t care if you have 10,000 followers. This was not my preferred way to get followers and follow people within my niche when I got started either. It is still not my prefered method, but I’ll be damned if reaching out to people does not have it’s benefits.
Right now go ahead over to Twitter and login to your account.
The very first thing that I did was follow those that I most admire within my niche. Now these may not be the followers that you want yourself but you will start receiving some quality content right away.
Next, go checkout some of the followers of these people that you have just followed. If you were following some people that you admire within your niche then they probably have a lot of followers that you may be interested in corresponding with. Go follow a few dozen of these people. You’ll start getting more content and more followers the more you do this.
Last but not least, head over to search dot twitter dot com and search for others with common interests to your own. You will find a ton of interesting people here to follow.
The great thing about Twitter is that most people follow you back. Now that you are following a few people and are on the verge of getting some new followers yourself, it is time to talk about providing some quality content to the Twitter community. Stay tuned, we’ll cover that in the next post!

I have over 15 years of experience as an Executive and Entrepreneur. But at the end of the day, I am no different than you. I want financial freedom and I am busting my butt to make a better life for me and my family and I am doing it online. This blog is a little bit of what I have to lend to your cause. I hope you and enjoy and would like you to comment freely. Feel free to contact me with your questions too. Let me help you get unstuck and on the road to the profits that you deserve.
Hey JL,
Thank you for the post, very appreciated. I had no idea you could ‘search dot twitter dot com’. That’s cool and I will use that. And I also have put the tip of following mentors into practice and it got me 33 new followers overnight (I guess people believe that success follows success) and it’s still adding fairly steadily. Looking forward to your next post, and by chance, will you be covering what to do about people (who follow you, so you return the favor and follow the) who just tweet link after link after link, sometimes 5-7 tweets at a time. I know the obvious is to stop following, but is there an alternative? I’m a newbie so I’m wondering if there’s some type of “twitter summary tool”
Tammie
There are two directions you can go. Follow the people you admire and know what they know. Then follow the people they follow and know what they want to know. But that is all one direction really. Up stream. In the other direction are the followers. Follow them and you may find you have a better following following you.
Hey Tammie,
I’ll cover this in the near future but for now, you can automate your account so that you follow people immediately after they follow you. I am using Tweetlater for that. As for getting 5, 6, 7 or more tweets all in a row from just one user? Here’s the scoop on that. Most times it will note in light gray where the feed came from. If it came from a service like Tweetlater then it will say Tweetlater. I stopped using Tweetlater for my feeds because they sent out feeds by the dozen and I hated doing to people the exact same thing that annoyed me when on the receiving end. That being said, I found Hootsuite which rarely sends out too many tweets in a row. As for anyone that let’s successive tweeting go on, I just unfollow. I figured it out so that I could be courteous to my followers yet keep providing good content all day long. The least I figure is that they can too!
