It’s About the Customer Stupid!
I could rant and rave about this for days on end. But, in order to keep this brief and to the point (so I don’t lose most of you and you actually learn something here!), I will reference something that I witnessed just yesterday.
I have been working on a product launch for some time now. In the waning days of this project I interacted a lot with the technical team that was helping to pull the final site together. One of the team members is an old internet marketing pro so I was shocked at the thought process here.
A part of the product launch is a free giveaway with access to a member’s area. Now inside the members area anyone can purchase the original product being sold on the sites main page. The team building the site set the members purchase price for the product to be $20 more than the member can buy it for by just going to the main page!
OK, we have a non-exclusive offer, that anyone in the world can access and in just one click we are going to try to get $20 more dollars for this product! And that is not the kicker! When I mention this to the tech team, they tell me to just let the customer figure it out!
I don’t know about you but aren’t we supposed to be removing ALL obstacles that could prevent a consumer from buying our products??? Isn’t that every single retailer’s goal?
Shouldn’t we also give our prospective buyers more credit than trying to dupe them out of $20 dollars for something they can get cheaper just one click away??? I was shocked and disappointed. “Just let the customer figure it out!” Not acceptable at all and it should not be in your business either.
Customer is king. They pay our bills, they grant us the privilege of earning a living. So next time you are in a situation and need to make a decision, and that situation involves customer interaction, it is a safe bet that you can go with the choice that makes your customer’s (or prospective customer’s) life just a little easier or just a little better!
