If you have never owned your own estore but are looking to start one then I suggest that you read on. I look at eBay stores as a way to get your feet wet before diving into something that can be much more demanding and complex. I think that I have a very unique spin on this and am not going to tell you that it’s because it’s easier, cheaper, etc… I have put together 3 solid business reasons that an eBay store should come before your own estore and have lived through these benefits myself.
Hands down (and maybe I am cheating here by combining two into one), speed to market and traffic. You can literally be up and selling with an eBay store tomorrow if you wanted AND have instant traffic. Check out my lost blog post about a friend that was starting their own estore and completely ignored my advice about opening an eBay store. eBay has millions of shoppers browsing their pages EVERY SINGLE DAY. Do you know what it takes to get hundreds or thousands of eyeballs on products in your own estore. It takes a lot of effort and a sound traffic system. I am guessing that you don’t have that ironed out yet but you would like to start making money sooner rather than later, right???
My second reason to start an eBay store before an estore is customers. eBay has millions which presents a great opportunity for you but that’s not what I am talking about. I am talking about building a customer base and learning to service those customers. eBay’s feedback system forces you to practice flawless customer service and is a great training ground for developing the habits that you need to operate an eBay store or your own estore effectively. And once you have established a sound customer base and gotten your estore off the ground, you can begin to promote your estore to your eBay customers and slowly migrate that base of customers over to your new venue.
Last but not least is learning to promote. Learning what products are hot and what are not. Learning how to drive incremental sales using eBays promotional tools and learning the value of these tools to your business. There is a lot that goes into running your own ecommerce site and eBay helps soften that learning curve just a little. You get to get your feet wet, not deal with the complexities of your own site (especially if you are not very tech oriented) while still learning to run your business, take care of your customers and promote your store and your products.
So there you have it. These are three solid business reasons why running an eBay st0re is the perfect segue into your own estore. Remember, if you have any questions or comments at all about this topic, just leave them in the comment field below. I WILL reply to all comments and look forward to hearing from you.
